Abstract

Abstract: The letters in the Hippocratic corpus that narrate the fictitious encounter between Hippocrates and Democritus met with exceptional attention in the Renaissance. This article describes their reception as reflected in its textual history from the first Latin version by Rinuccio d’Arezzo through the commentaries by Alaard of Amsterdam and Marcellin Bompart. It then highlights one aspect of their intrepretative history as a treatise on melancholy. By linking aspects of the ancient and medieval medical and philosophical traditions and applying them to the epistolary novella, the Humanists succeeded in legitimating such an interpretation. The Renaissanceaemulatio/superatio thus justified viewing the epistolary fiction as a thematic treatise on melancholy exemplified by Democritus. This manner of reception typical of the Renaissance is represented most clearly by Robert Burton’sAnatomy of Melancholy, the third edition of which established the iconography of theDemocritus melancholicus, together with the older one ofDemocritus ridens, the “laughing philosopher”. The Humanists' treatment of this story has left its traces on critical historical scholarship of modern times.
